New Cathedral Street - Cateaton Street steps
Last year’s festival champions transform city steps into a verdant mountain stream
Hulme Community Garden Centre – last year’s festival champions – have designed a suitably ambitious garden for 2015. Now, the steps that run down from New Cathedral Street to Cateaton Street have been transformed into a mountain stream. This stream wends its way down a gentle slope, leading from a woodland area carpeted with ferns and mosses, down to a pool in a meadow studded with wildflowers. A pathway leads through the woodland and over a bridge at the top of the slope, which gives a view over pool and meadow. The largely native plants here are all ones that provide food and shelter for wildlife, a way of illustrating to increase local biodiversity without compromising on aesthetics, while the bridge is crafted from a combination of recycled wood and locally coppiced hazel. From trees and shrubs to perennials and tiny mosses and with positive, calming colours – this garden is unmissable.
