New Cathedral Street becomes the focus for a melodious, musical takeover

New for Dig the City is the Bridgewater Hall Bandstand, with live music every day during the festival. On Friday 31 July, it features University of Manchester music students; they’re followed on Saturday 1 August by RNCM’s finest. Manchester Jazz Festival stages a takeover on Sunday 2 August (see below), while Manchester Music Hub takes the stand on Monday 3 August. It’s the turn of Brighter Sounds on Tuesday 4 August, while Thursday is most definitely one for the kids, with family-friendly music from the likes of Dr. Butler’s Hatstand Medicine Band.

Manchester Jazz Festival’s takeover line-up, Sunday 2 August

12pm-1pm: The Yesa Sikyi six-piece bring 1950s and contemporary jazz to the stand

2pm-3pm: The James Girling Quintet; enjoy a repertoire spanning jazz, blues and funk from New Orleans

4pm-5pm: Taupe, a young power-jazz commando team that trashes musical boundaries, from hip hop to metal through jazz
